Mutiara SIS Al Jufri Airport, Kota Palu, Sulawesi Tengah

Job description:

Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport is located in Central Sulawesi (Palu), the area which was heavily affected by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami on 28 September 2018. The extent of damage was especially severe to the runway and taxi area of the Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport where the tsunami turned the ground underneath into mud in a post-quake phenomenon called “liquefaction”.

Vantage-RIC is a proven method for liquefaction mitigation and ground densification and it was chosen for the restoration of the airport runways and surrounding areas with a total square area of 51,000 m², divided into 4 zones.

Solution:

Our job was to perform RIC works around the damaged runway and also on a piece of land on top of which there was a heavily damaged part of the runway (which was removed prior to our works). Target was liquefaction mitigation.

Prior to the RIC works, each compaction point shall be clearly marked with a suitable identifiable pin or paint marker. All compaction points shall be carefully set out to the plan position shown on the Drawings for the RIC works.

Results:

We compacted around 34,000 m² from 9th Jan to 11th Feb (roughly 4 weeks). The challenge was that the airport was still operational during that time which limited our working hours. Also, we had to move our machine in and out of the working zone whenever a plane landed or departed.

Due to the very high mobility of our Vantage-RIC rig, we could do as required without compromising on the daily workload.
